Appliques are made with fabric sewn on, embroidery designs are made with just accent thread.  All appliques and embroidery designs add thickness and can be felt inside the garment.  
Due to thickness using a "sketch" type embroidery is nice to reduce the hand feel.  
We are only doing appliques with Dreamweight or Jersey because layering the Heavyweight is posing an issue with thickness and ability even sew. 
Appliques and Embroidery can be done on Heavyweight (Cozy, Comfy, Dreamweight etc) or Dreamweight, but can not be done on Jersey at this time
